So many wonderful stories from International Book Giving Day 2015 have been pouring in throughout the weekend.
I’m overwhelmed with the generosity of so many people, and of the huge reach that IBGD has.
14th February, and in fact the whole weekend, was one dedicated to getting books into the hands of as many children as possible far and wide. Books were given in UK, South Africa, Canada, Cambodia, Nepal, Brazil, Australia, France, Hungary, Cambodia, oh and so many more!
Whilst I will bring you more details on Wednesday, I simply must share these photos with you today …
INDIA: In our village – Vunnava, Guntur District, Andhra Pradesh, India. At our village library, all the visitors (primarily children) put their names in a box for two weeks. And on International Book Giving Day (14 feb), we randomly picked 50 names from the box. And a book is given to each. Here is the sponsor of the program distributing the books to children. We plan to run this program every year. BRAZIL: My husband and me asked friends to donate books on my baby shower; we received around 350 books which we donated to a local community.NIGERIA: 1Child1Book gifting books in Lagos.NIGERIA: 1Child1Book headed out in Lagos to deliver books to children.FROM NEPAL…… “Grade X students of JAGAT MANDIR Higher Secondary School gave books to the students who read the maximum number of books from the library. Every year Grade X organise the picnic by collecting the amount and the remaining amount they buy the books and give to the students. This time they gave to the students who read the maximum number of books from the library.’
This is really very cool! Bravo! It was less impressive for me, but giving books away is always very special. So when it is on a special day, knowing that other people are also giving books, makes it very special. Thank you for sharing the great photos, Emma.
At The Story Garden in our Leaders for Readers program we gave each of the readers (ages 4-8) a book, and then asked the leaders (ages 13-17) to take one and give it to a child on the way home or in their neighbourhood or wherever….and take a selfie of the event. Can’t wait to see the photos!
